Apparently these stores are being overlooked by teenagers lately, thus their sales are not doing as well as they would like them to be. Teenagers would rather shop at trendier stores like Forever 21 or H&M and feel like department stores are for older people. The stores have realized this and have started changing their merchandise to be more "fast fashion" trendier clothes to keep up with these other stores (source).

Interesting. I'm not one who's caught up on the current events in the world of retail marketing, especially when it comes to fashion, but I can tell you that we (as consumers) are witnessing the immense success and high demand of today's small and frequent trendy/hip stores, like H&M and Express. It's great to hear that the all-mighty department stores that once ruled during the 70's, 80's, and early 90's are starting to make changes and adapt with acquiring new trendier clothing lines, but I think better product placement consisting with an attractive floor layout within their stores is a much better strategy for the long haul... if they so choose to survive in this extremely competitive market.
